Welcome to the website of the department of Economics, of the University of Ioannina, one of the leading economics departments of Greece. Our department offers high quality and up to date teaching and research, in accordance with international standards.

 

Historical Data

The Department of Economics was founded in 1996 and admitted its first students in 1998. Its undergraduate program covers a wide range of modules in micro-and macroeconomic analysis, public and monetary economics, international trade and labor economics, industrial organization and entrepreneurship, international trade and European economics, economic history, finance and accounting and quantitative methods (mathematics, statistics and econometrics).

Two specializations are offered:

1. Economic Analysis and Policy

2. Applied Economics and Quantitative Methods

The Department offers a postgraduate program in Economic Analysis and a doctoral program (Ph.D) in Economics.

The Departments’ faculty members have extensive teaching experience and research records in high quality journals.

The Department also supports the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit of the University of Ioannina by offering entrepreneurship courses to all students on campus.

The Department is an active participant in ERASMUS+ program having more than 80 interdepartmental agreements with universities throughout Europe.

 

Infrastructure

Teaching takes place in the department’s smart classrooms and application of theory occurs in our state of the art computed lab, with effective use of up to date technologies and multimedia. Course curriculum is updated continuously in order to take into account all new scientific development and the updated demands in the labour market. Communication between the faculty members and the students creates the perfect academic environmentfor all prospective students.

 

Faculty

The faculty has an active research agenda. Their areas of expertise range from pure theory to applied subjects. Many have achieved significant distinctions in their fields. Their background lays the foundation for a transfer and application of knowledge that ensures the students’ access to new trends and research in Economic Theory. Students will acquire the necessary knowledge which will equip them to compete in the domestic as well as in the highly competitive international labor market.

History

The department of Economics was founded on 1996 and the department opened for classes on the academic year 1998-1999. The department's purposes are to acquaint students with the economic aspects of modern society, to familiarize them with techniques for the analysis of contemporary economic problems and to develop in them an ability to exercise judgment in evaluating public policy. There is training for the general student as well as for those who plan careers as economists in civil service, private enterprise, teaching, or research.
